If you've got something to say to someone, and you've got to say it now, try sending her an instant message through Facebook Chat. Chat allows you to see which friends are online at the same time you are, and then enables you to send quick messages back and forth with any one of those people, or have multiple simultaneous conversations with different friends.
You'll find Chat in the bottom-right corner of any page on Facebook. You'll also find a preview of online friends in the left column of your Home page.
Receiving Chats is simply a matter of being online. When a friend sends you a chat, a small window pops up next to the Chat bar in the bottom right of your screen.
To send a chat message back to them, simply click into the text field at the bottom of the chat window, start typing, and press Enter when you're done. Your message appears below your friend's, just as it does with most IM services.
At the top of each chat window or chat box is a blue bar displaying the name of the person you're chatting with and two or three icons. The one you might or might not have is the video icon. The two you will definitely have are the gear icon and the x icon.
The X, farthest to the right, simply allows you to close the chat window at any time. Don't worry about losing the contents of your conversation. Everything said is saved into your Inbox.
The Gear icon, when clicked, opens up a menu of options. These options include:
See Full Conversation: Clicking this brings you to a view of your entire conversation history.
Clear Window: If you find yourself wading through too much history at a time, clicking this will give you a blank slate of a chat window. This won't delete the contents permanently, though. Your full message history is still saved in your Inbox.
Add Friends to Chat: If you're discussing something with a friend and think that you need the opinion of someone else, you can add them to the chat, and you can all talk as a group.
Report as Spam: If you're getting odd messages from a friend promoting something they wouldn't normally promote, there's a chance their account was phished, meaning someone gained access to it that shouldn't have. Report the spam messages to protect yourself, your friend, and other users from having the same thing happen to them.
The Group Chat window has an additional icon, which may look similar to the Group Icon. Click this icon at any point to add even more participants to your Group Chat.
There are times when you are using Facebook that you might want to send a message directly to one or more of your friends. This is often known as DM (direct message) or PM (Private Message) as it goes directly to the person (or persons) you address it to and not onto your timeline. It is similar to an email but has the advantage of being live if the person is logged into their Facebook account.
Chat is on your computer and accessed via Facebook. Messenger is also part of Facebook but is an app that has to be downloaded for you to be able to use this on your iPhone or iPad – we will look at how to do this later in this guide. Messages to your friends will automatically notify them (depending on how they have their notifications set up).
To use chat you must be logged into your Facebook account. It is usually found on the right hand side of your screen and could be minimised as per the image below or showing a list of all your friends as contacts. If no-one is showing type the first letter of the name of the person you want to message and all the names of friends beginning with that letter will show.
Step 1: Selecting a contact to chat with
Click on the name that you want to send a message to.
Step 2: Start a conversation
A new window will pop up. I want to know download. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then press enter – your message will be sent to your contact. If they are online they are able to answer you immediately and a real time typed conversation can take place.
Step 3: Personalise your messages
Many people like to enhance their messages with images, this can include photos, emojis and gifs. To insert one of these all you need to do is click on the required icon at the bottom of the chat window.

Step 4: Using messenger on mobile
To use chat on a smartphone you will need to have the Messenger app installed. This is a free app and can be downloaded from the App store on an iPhone or from Google Play on Android. For help on how to download and install apps see our guide (???). The icon for the messenger app looks like this.
The app works in the same way as chat on Facebook on your computer automatically accessing your friends list and adding them to contacts. You can also add emojis, images and gifs to enhance your chats. If you see this sign it means you can dictate your text instead of typing using the inbuilt microphone in your smartphone.
